What is VA Math?
VA Math is the method the Department of Veterans Affairs uses to combine multiple disability ratings. Ratings are not added; each one applies only to the remaining non-disabled percentage of the whole person, starting with the highest. The final value rounds to the nearest 10%.

Worked example: 50% and 30% give 50 + 30 × 50/100 = 65, which rounds to 70%. Two 50s give 75, so 80% — never 100%. Two 90s give 99, which rounds up to 100%.

TDIU and Special Monthly Compensation
If a single disability is rated at least 60%, or your combined rating is at least 70% with one disability rated at least 40%, you may meet the schedular threshold for Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) — paid at the 100% rate. The calculator above flags this automatically. Severe disabilities such as loss of use of a limb or need for aid and attendance may also qualify for Special Monthly Compensation on top of your schedular rating.

Can two 50% VA ratings equal 100%?
No. VA combines ratings against remaining efficiency, not by adding them. The first 50% leaves 50% of the whole person; the second 50% applies to that remainder (25), for a combined value of 75, which rounds to an 80% rating.
How does the bilateral factor help my rating?
When both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles carry compensable ratings, VA combines those ratings first and adds 10% of the result before combining anything else (38 CFR § 4.26). Ratings of 30%, 20%, and 20% for each knee combine to 64 (60%) without it and 66 (70%) with it, worth $373.43 more per month at 2026 rates.
How much is 30% VA disability pay in 2026?
A 30% rating pays $552.47 per month for a veteran with no dependents, or $617.47 with a spouse, under rates effective December 1, 2025. At 30% and above, VA adds amounts for a spouse, children, and dependent parents.
